The old market is good all year round. It is always fun, noisy and bright here. But its best time is before Christmas, when a traditional Christmas market is held here.
Market history
At the beginning of the 13th century, German traders and artisans settled here. The place was named after Saint Gavl, the patron saint of the local area. By 1232, the Fruit Market was formed here, and by 1287 the city of Havel became part of the Old Town. There were more and more shopping arcades, the market grew along with the city. Not only fruits were already sold here, but also honey, vegetables, flowers and other products grown by the surrounding peasants. Local artisans sold their products here.

Just like many years ago, the market is full of people from the very morning. Tourists come here for traditional Prague souvenirs. Here you can pick up any sweets as a gift for loved ones - cookies or sweets in tin boxes with city views, local and Belgian chocolate, but the most important thing is the payment - traditional Czech waffles with chocolate or cream filling, which have been baked in the same way since 1856 recipe. Other gastronomic souvenirs that are most often brought from the Czech Republic include Czech cheeses and national alcoholic drinks - beer, plum brandy, and becherovka. But such products are cheaper to buy in supermarkets or duty-free than in the market.
In addition to the usual magnets and postcards depicting the main Prague sights, in souvenir shops you can find astronomical clocks - copies of the famous tower chimes from the Old Town Square. Ceramic beer mugs or coffee cups will be a good souvenir. Puppet dolls are still very popular. They are handmade and will delight not only children, but also adults. Porcelain dolls in national costumes and figurines of witches swinging on a broom are very popular. Of course, one of the most important gifts for children and adults will be a toy, magnet, mug or notebook with the image of the Mole - the hero of the Czech cartoon beloved by many. Before Christmas on the market there is a large selection of Christmas tree decorations made of glass, figurines with Czech Santa Claus - Mikulas. All these souvenirs are made and painted by hand.
