10-15 meters north of the Gostiny Dvor of Suzdal, the one-domed Kresto-Nikolskaya church rises. The history of the temple began in 1654, when a plague epidemic raged in the city, which destroyed almost half of the city's population, which at that time reached 2,467 people.

Short story

According to ancient tradition, the people of Suzdal performed a procession of the cross and a prayer service at the crossroads. Where the roads met with a cross, that is, at the intersection of Staraya Street and the street going from Tsarekonstantinovskaya church under the Kabatskaya mountain (modern Lenin street), the townspeople erected a wooden chapel, calling it the "Cross".

So the people of Suzdal thanked their heavenly patrons for getting rid of the "pestilence". In 1770, the dilapidated wooden Cross Church was replaced by a stone, consecrating one of its thrones in the name of Nicholas the Wonderworker. In the 19th century, the western part of the Kresto-Nikolsky Church was dismantled, and a refectory and a bell tower with a spire appeared in its place.

The architecture of the Kresto-Nikolskaya church

The Kresto-Nikolskaya church is a type of a three-part pillarless church, consisting of a main volume, an apse, a refectory and a bell tower. The cube of the main volume is covered with a four-pitched roof topped with one bulbous head. On the east side, near the altar apse, a small chapel was built in memory of the old one. A special feature of the Kresto-Nikolskaya Church is its two-color decor.

Part of the building (the church itself), facing Lenin Street, is painted yellow, against which the snow-white shoulder blades, cornice patterns, pediments and baroque platbands clearly stand out. Another part, clearly visible from the Old Street, consists of a refectory and a white bell tower.
