Brief history and description

Above the steep slope of the Pochaina ravine, in the dry bed of the river of the same name, rises a round Taynitskaya tower. The building owes its name to the "secret passage" to the Pochaina river, dug under the fortress walls.

In the event of a prolonged siege of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, an underground passage could lead to the river and stock up on water. In the 19th century, during excavation work on the arrangement of the Zelensky Congress, the cache was filled up, and to drain the water, the underground rivulet was enclosed in a collector made of wooden pipes.

In 1924, these pipes were replaced with reinforced concrete ones, and today only the ravine and Pochainskaya street remind of the Pochaina River. According to legend, near the Kremlin hill, at the source of Pochayna, there is a stone block, and if it moves from its place, then a small rivulet, breaking free, will rush in wide streams and wash the city off the face of the earth.

In the 17th century, the tower itself was fraught with destructive power: gunpowder ("fire potion") was stored within its walls, and a powder factory was built nearby, in a ravine. The second name of the Taynitskaya tower appeared from the "Zeleyny Dvor" - on "Zelena".

The third name of the same tower "Mironositskaya" is due to the proximity of the building to the Church of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women, which to this day rises on the opposite side of the Pochainsky ravine. Like all round towers of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, Taynitskaya has three tiers with loopholes equipped with battle chambers, and one tier with battlements. In the 17th century, one copper pishchal was installed on the Taynitskaya tower, and in 1785 - 1790 the ancient structure was converted into a food warehouse by order of the Governor of Nizhny Novgorod I.M. Rebinder. In 1826-1887, the tower was occupied by a battalion tseikhhaus, intended for storing military equipment and weapons.

Later, the fortification was given to the archives of the Nizhny Novgorod governor. During the Great Patriotic War, the Taynitskaya Tower again did a good job: the roof was demolished, and anti-aircraft guns were installed in its place.that defended the city from enemy air raids. During the 1960s restoration, the hipped roof was restored. The height of the Taynitskaya Tower - from the lower tier to the guard tower - is 30 meters.
